It’s surrender—an honest way to bring your pain to God and invite His presence into the very place that hurts. Here’s how worship transforms grief and a gentle playlist to sit with on hard days.

Let’s do something a little different and talk about the power of worship in grief—how worship can transform our hearts right in the middle of pain. Worship is more than the songs at the beginning of a service. Worship is an act of surrender, a way to connect with God and invite His presence into our lives when we need Him most.

When we worship—especially in pain—something holy happens. Our focus begins to shift from our sorrow to the greatness of our God. In that place we find healing and peace. Lifting our hands can be a simple, embodied way to say, I’m not holding anything back. I surrender. It’s the universal sign of release and trust.

Worship gives us room to express our pain, questions, and doubts, while it gently reminds us of God’s goodness, faithfulness, and love. The Psalms were written for this—songs that carry both lament and praise. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

Choosing to worship in grief is a declaration: my pain does not have the final say—God does. Worship lifts our eyes from what’s temporary to what is eternal; from our struggles to our Savior who overcame them.

Ways to weave worship into your healing

Begin the day with worship. Let one song or a few quiet minutes set the tone. Sing if you can, or simply sit with the lyrics and breathe.
Let worship help you process emotions. When waves of grief rise, turn on a worship song in the kitchen, on a walk, or in the car. Let the words say what your heart can’t yet articulate and meet God right there.
Create a worship space. A chair by the window, a spot on the back porch, a path under the trees—keep your Bible, journal, and headphones nearby so it becomes a little sanctuary you return to.
Worship with others when you’re able. Corporate worship reminds us we’re not alone. Close your eyes and listen to God’s people sing; it’s a small echo of the day when every tribe and tongue will worship the King together.

A reminder for tender days: worship doesn’t erase pain. It invites God’s presence into the pain, and where He is, there is always hope and peace. Everything God touches, He changes.

A gentle worship playlist for hard days

These songs echo surrender, trust, and the presence of the Healer. Let the lyrics wash over you.

  • “It Is Well” (Bethel Music) — a strong declaration of trust in God’s sovereignty in every circumstance; consider reading Horatio Spafford’s story behind the hymn.

  • “Raise a Hallelujah” (Jonathan & Melissa Helser) — praise in the face of fear.

  • “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” (Hillsong) — when you feel overwhelmed, step out in faith and let God hold you.

  • “Goodness of God” (Jenn Johnson) — a testimony of God’s faithfulness even in the hard.

  • “You’re Gonna Be OK” (Brian & Jenn Johnson) — reassurance for nights that feel impossible.

  • “Reckless Love” (Cory Asbury) — the relentless love of God when you feel unworthy.

  • “Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace)” (Hillsong) — the timeless grace that restores what’s shattered; John Newton’s story of redemption adds fresh depth.

As you listen, remember God’s promise: “to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3)

A prayer for your next step
Lord, meet me here. Receive what I cannot carry. Trade my heaviness for Your presence, my sorrow for Your joy, and my ache for Your peace. Amen.

Today, as I listened to Rend Collective’s “Counting Every Blessing”, I was reminded of just how blessed I am. Despite the ups and downs of life, I am filled with gratitude for the abundance of blessings that surround me.

I am thankful for 30 years with the love of my life, Myron, who has been my rock through every storm. The joy of being a mother to two incredible boys, Jacob and Caleb, fills my heart with gratitude. Although Jacob is now in heaven, I am immensely proud of the strength and faith that Caleb has shown in the face of adversity.

The tragic accident in 2015 changed our lives forever, but through it all, I have witnessed miraculous healing in Caleb, both physically and spiritually. Surviving stage four cancer was a battle that shaped me in ways I never imagined, and being here today to witness the blessings that followed fills me with awe.

I am grateful for the beautiful daughter, Crystal, who has joined our family, bringing joy and love into our lives. Over 25 years of being cancer-free is a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. The support of friends and family, as well as the unwavering love of God, have sustained me through every trial and triumph.

As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the grace and mercy that have guided me through each challenge. My heart overflows with gratitude for the savior who walks beside me, offering comfort and strength in times of need.

In the midst of life’s trials, there is always something to be thankful for. Let us embrace gratitude and find joy in the simple blessings that surround us each day.

Today, I encourage you to take a moment to count your blessings. What are you grateful for? Share in the comments below!

I love music!

It has been a source of encouragement for me all of my life, but especially  in the hard season, like cancer and after the loss of our son, Jacob.

I remember sitting in the hospital bed, tears streaming down my face, as I sang the lyrics to a song we sang in church, Dennis Jernigan’s “You are my all in all”. To this day, that is a cherished memory in a bleak time of my life.

I was going through some old files a while back and came across a short playlist I’d created shortly after the accident that changed our lives forever:

  • “Sweet Victory”, Trip Lee
  • “War”, Trip Lee
  • “Speak Life”, Toby Mac
  • “Blessed Be Your name”, Matt Redmon
  • “Beautiful Offering”, Big Daddy Weave
  • “Home”, Chris Tomlin
  • “There will be a day”, Jeremy Camp
  • “You Keep Hope Alive”, Mandisa
  • “Battle is the Lord’s”, Rebecca St. James
  • “Who am I?’, Needtobreathe
  • “Battle belongs”, Phil Wickham
  • “Matter”, For King & Country
  • “Thy will”, Hilary Scott
  • “Jesus can”, Austin French

Over the years, there have lots of albums I’ve listened to on repeat too. Here’s a post I wrote about one of them: Need Hope That Things Will Get Better?

There have been many others like this one by Steven Curtis Chapman: Steven Curtis Chapman – Still

Or this one: TobyMac – Help Is On The Way (Maybe Midnight)

Really, though, these are just a sampling of my favorites. Music has helped Caleb and I heal so much that we create this list of our top songs since the accident: Jenny and Caleb’s Top Songs Since the Accident

Even that list—at 150 songs!—is not exhaustive. We continue to share songs back and forth with each other.

Here are a few posts I wrote about some of them:

Have you heard this new song by Anne Wilson? In case you didn’t know, Anne is a Christian musician who lost her brother in 2017 and now shares her family’s story through song.

This latest single is dedicated to her brother Jacob’s memory. I love how she created a way for her fans to share their own stories on an online grief wall.

I encourage you to listen to the song and then let me know if you post on the wall. I’d love to read your story too.

Ever since GodPrints was published, I have had several people ask me how my health is doing these days. For several months, I could say, “Thank God I am doing well”.
But the last few months have been difficult again. Lest you think that because I have written a book, I have everything all figured out; that just isn’t the case. I’m still on this journey, as you are my friend.
Still struggling to not get frustrated while I wait for the next doctor’s appointment…
The next test to be scheduled…
The next news to abruptly change my plans.
But history has shown me that if I am going to process this right, I have to deal with this.
I can’t shove it down, pretend like it’s not there, or somehow wish it out of existence.
The day I found out about this latest series of unpleasant medical tests that loom on my horizon, I told Myron that I just felt like crying.
I’m so sick of this. I wish I didn’t have to go through this.
But I do.
My strong, not really emotional man, looked at me with compassion in his eyes and said, “I know. I understand.”
And then he just sat with me in silence as the stray tears fell.
I told him, “You know, I feel a lot better just having told you. Thank you for that.”
To which he replied, “No problem.”
And that’s just the thing; he’s been with me for the past 29 years and through all the problems of life. Others may come and go. Problems may come and go. But I am so grateful to God that I have a man of God who has faithfully stood by me. And even though I know he gets frustrated by this news just like I do, he still remains by my side.
The next morning, God spoke to me in quite a comical way. He really has a sense of humor!
You see, we were in the final stretch of completing the audiobook recordings for GodPrints and the narrator had sent me the last several chapters to listen to and approve. While I listened to them throughout the day, God used my very own words, my very own testimony!, to remind me of all those GodPrint moments that He’s given our family, given me, over the years since I gave him my life at the age of 15.
Time after time after time, He has been faithful.
Through cancer…
Through financial devastation and homelessness…
Through my husband’s back surgeries and all that entailed…
Through the loss of our son.
Not to mention all the little mundane daily things that we all experience in this life.
Through it all, the one constant through them all has been Jesus Christ. And the greatest gift of all, that same Christ lives in me! In fact, He lives in everyone who calls upon his name and cries out to him. He is but a breath, a heartbeat away, my friend.
Back to that day as I struggled to get my mind back in a good place, God continued to use my very own words to remind me it’s not over yet. As long as I have breath in these lungs, it ain’t over!
He’s been good and faithful and kind. He’ll continue to be the same: yesterday, today, and forever. The gradual turning of my heart and mind back to hope had begun.
Then to top it all off, Caleb sent me this phenomenal new song by Phil Wickham, that once again sent me to tears. (Admittedly, that is easy to do, as I am known in our family as the one who will cry at the drop of a hat.)
But this time, this time
They were tears of release.
Tears of Joy.
Tears of renewal.
Tears of gratitude.
Releasing the pain, the frustration, all that’s out of my control to the only One who is truly strong enough and big enough to carry it.
Tears of joy for the peace that flooded my soul when I yielded that control back to Him and quit trying to solve problems on my own.
Tears of renewal as He recentered me upon the stable Rock of Christ, and the promises from His word, that not only will He never leave me nor forsake me, but this world is not all there is.
There is so much more, my friend.
Yes, there is more to this life than we live now. Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. And all the other fruits of the Spirit are ours now.
But oh friend, because of what Jesus did on that black Friday…
Because of the blood He shed, our sins can be forever washed away and we can be made clean in the eyes of God.
Because death could not hold Him, and He rose from the grave I, no we, don’t have to fear death or the grave anymore.
But even more, now I, no we, have the promise of eternal life.
Eternal, my friend!
Life everlasting with all those who love our Savior.
Life everlasting with our precious loved ones who have gone on before us and loved our savior.
Life everlasting in a city, and a country, that is so beyond our wildest imagination that scripture tells us no eye has seen, no ear has heard what God has prepared for those who love him. We can’t even imagine how great and awesome our heavenly home will be.
So, that morning, this song sure was a great reminder of our coming promise.
One day our savior will split the skies, the trumpet will blow, and we who are alive and remain will be caught up to meet them in the clouds and be with our Lord forever.
What an awesome and astounding day that will be for those of us who long for his appearing!
As we celebrate Resurrection Sunday, will you join me in turning our hearts and minds from our pain and problems, to the One who loved us to death, literally, and has promised us so many good things more to come?
As I told Caleb after he shared that song, “Sometimes I just really want Sunday to come now. You know what I mean? But obviously, he’s not done with me… not done with us.”
And Caleb wisely replied, “You’re right. God’s not done with us and He’s working a better plan through all of it.”
Amen, son!
Dear friend, He’s not done with you or your story, either. I pray this song blesses you and continues to turn your heart toward hope this Easter weekend.
Let me know in the comments below, will you? I’d love to hear from you!

Hi friends,

I love music and its power to bring hope and healing to our hearts. Both of our boys, Caleb and Jacob, have always loved music just as much (or more!) as I do. Listen to this album on repeat!

I’m so grateful for brothers and sisters in Christ who are passionate about sharing the goodness of God and how the Lord has helped them with others. The album, “When You Speak” by Jeremy Camp is one of those that ministers to listeners right where they are. There’s no fluff here; just real life and real truth.

Without further ado, here’s my in-depth review:

  • “All of the healing in the middle of the hurting…” These lyrics from the very first song, “Can’t Take Away”, caught my attention and made me pause and really consider the rest of what Christian musician Jeremy Camp has to say. The heart of this song is one reason I can confidently endorse this record. Jeremy reflects the heart of a man who has experienced deep hurts in life and yet found healing through Jesus.
  • The second song, “You See Me”, reminds me that being genuine in the everyday struggles of life can bring freedom if we take those struggles to the God who sees each one of us and knows what we’re going through.
  • The third song, “Getting Started”: If you only listen to one song on this album, this needs to be it. I can’t tell you how many times I have put this song on repeat. What a glorious reminder that it doesn’t matter where we find ourselves, even in the broken-hearted places of life or those well-hidden deep wounds. God is still walking with us and just getting started on the healing that he wants to bring.
  • The next song, “One Desire”: I feel like this was definitely written during the time of COVID! It talks about being weighed down by all the cares of this world and ‌ allowing them to steal our joy, but then recentering our focus on what we’re really “chasing after”. We can find that hope and peace when we look to God. He’s the one who can rekindle that fire in our hearts when we make him our one desire.
  • The next song, “Steady Me”: From the very first lines…. “You never said I wouldn’t feel pain. But You said you’d be with me to the end”, this song is a great reminder that Jesus never promised us easy street. He never promised us that when we give our lives to him, everything will be perfect. That we would have no more troubles or experience loss or brokenness. He did, however, promise that he would never leave us and never forsake us.
  • I know the song “When You Speak” is probably the most well-known because it’s been so popular on the radio. However, I want to challenge you to listen again and really pay attention to the lyrics. What lies are you listening to today? What areas of your life do you need to hear the Father speak? Will you allow Him to do that?
  • The song, “No Rain”… Wow. What a great perspective the chorus reminds us of! How is a garden supposed to grow if there ain’t rain? I know I’ve found out that how you process life is everything. This song challenges me to consider how I am processing life. Will I let those hard times grow me into a better person or will I shrivel up and die? Or maybe drown in the deluge of rain instead of seeking help? The choice is mine.
  • The lyrics of the song “Here With You” feel like they are written as a letter from Jeremy’s heart straight to me…and you. Let it be an encouragement for when you’re going through those times in life; you have friends. You are not alone.
  • “What Love Has Done”: This song helps me remember one of the greatest tools that we have: gratitude. It will help us refocus our thoughts on things that will actually benefit us, not weigh us down to despair. For me personally, thinking along these lines can totally shift my thinking from focusing and dwelling on the negative things that happen to me or that are going on around me and remembering the great things that God’s love has already done. And when I remember those great things that have already happened, I have hope for the future that He’s not done yet.
  • “Break Your Promises”: I love the reminder that God never breaks His promises. This song dovetails perfectly with the last song which reminds us He never breaks His promises. We have hope for a glorious future in heaven, but we also have hope that He will navigate all of life’s trials with us in the here and the now.
  • The song, “Consumed” asks the questions: What thoughts do you entertain in your mind? What do you dwell on the most? This song reminds us that as believers, we don’t have to be consumed by worry or the cares of this world. We can take them to God. Let this song be our heart’s cry right along with Jeremy.
  • “Anxious Heart”: First off, I absolutely love the guitar in this song! Second, have you ever struggled with anxiety? I know I have battled with allowing my mind to run away with anxious thoughts. I won’t spoil it because I want you to listen to this song, but he gives a very practical way of dealing with our anxious hearts.
  • “This Too Shall Pass”: Let the words of this ballad sweep deep into the crevices of your parched and barren soul–especially in those times when you just can’t make sense of life. We can hold on to His promises because all of this will pass one day. None of this is forever.

So dear friend, if you can’t tell, I really love this album. Once again, Jeremy Camp is using his talents and abilities to reach out a hand of healing to his fans, to the lost and the hurting. I hope you can listen to it and let it minister to you. I know it has ministered to me.

My favorite line is in the song, “No Rain”, when Jeremy proclaims, “I found Heaven when I went through Hell”. I can attest to that in my own life. What about you? I’d love to hear what you think after you listen to this album! Reach out and let me know!

Remember, friend, there’s always hope for the hurting and healing to be had for those who seek it.

Music!

It has been a source of encouragement for me all my life, but especially in the hard seasons, like cancer and after losing our son, Jacob.

I remember sitting in the hospital bed, weary of the cancer treatment back in 1998, tears streaming down my face, as I sang the lyrics to a song we sang in church, Dennis Jernigan’s “You are my all in all”. To this day, that is a cherished memory from an otherwise bleak time in my life.

Then, fast forward to 2015, and our world was rocked by The Accident. We lost our youngest son, Jacob, in a drunk driving accident. We almost lost our oldest son, Caleb, but God spared him. (Thank you, Jesus!) And once again, music began vital to processing life for me.

I was going through some old files a while back and came across a short playlist I’d created shortly afterward:

  • “Sweet Victory”, Trip Lee
  • “Speak Life”, Toby Mac
  • “Blessed Be Your Name”, Matt Redman
  • “Beautiful Offering”, Big Daddy Weave
  • “Home”, Chris Tomlin
  • “There will be a day,” Jeremy Camp
  • “You Keep Hope Alive”, Mandisa
  • “Battle is the Lord’s”, Rebecca St. James
  • “Who am I?’, Needtobreathe
  • “Battle belongs”, Phil Wickham
  • “Matter”, For King & Country

What about you, friend? What are some of your favorite spirit-lifting songs? Share below!

Always in hope,

Jenny
